Of Jackson, MI passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the age of 90. He was born August 19, 1930 in Indianapolis, IN. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; brother, Robert; four step-children; 10 step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Tom; one sister; and two brothers. At 17 he enlisted in the US Navy submarine corp, where he served on the USS Grampus. After his service he graduated from Nyack College in New York. Most of his career was spent at Eastern Airline in Operations. He enjoyed boating, water skiing, traveling, and bbq ribs. In retirement one of his greatest interests was researching the burial of Civil War soldiers. In doing this he worked on replacing damaged and missing headstones, helping people find their Civil War ancestors and other projects relating to the Civil War in Jackson County. He also worked on other historical projects and in 2019 was named Jackson County Veteran of the Year. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Legacy Assisted Living for their care the last year and a half and especially to Bree. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at the Watson Funeral Chapel in Jackson on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 1:00pm with Michael D. Mason officiating. Inurnment will take place at St. John Cemetery at 2:30pm with military honors. Memorial contribution may be made to the Jackson District Library, where he did most of his research and jokingly referred to it as his second home.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am until the time of service at 1:00pm.
