Violet (Vi) Ruth Henderson of Spring Arbor went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 14, 2022 at the age of 98. She was born on October 14, 1923 to Wilbur and Mae Morgan. She is survived by her four children Rick (Cindy) Henderson of Spring Arbor, Clark (Grace) Henderson of Kentucky, Craig Henderson of Hawaii, and Cindy (Ken) Rohly of Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Chapman; brother-in-law Don Coward; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard; sister Wilma Moore; brothers in-law Herbert Moore and James Chapman; and sisters-in-law Theo Coward and Mary Jo Chilcote.
Vi graduated from Indiana University in June 1947 majoring in business education and began teaching at Spring Arbor High School and Junior College (Michigan) that fall. She earned a Master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Butler University (Indiana) during the summers over the next few years. In 1954, she married the love of her life, Richard Henderson, and took several years off work to raise her children. In 1963, she started teaching elementary school in Jackson Public Schools. She became an elementary school librarian and retired from JPS in 1983. Vi enjoyed traveling, cooking and entertaining, and visiting the homebound. She made several trips to Rancho Batania, a Christian Camp for the FM Mexican Conference.
A Celebration of Vi’s life will be held at The Arbor Church, 120 E. Main St. in Spring Arbor, MI on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11:00am with Rev. Mark Van Valin, Rev. Darold Hill and Rev. Earl Habecker. There will be a private interment at the Spring Arbor Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christian Education Department of The Arbor Church.
