Sharon Ann Shannon

Sharon Ann Shannon, 90, passed away peacefully in her home in Jackson, Michigan on May 21, 2025.  She was born February 19, 1935, the daughter of William and Anna (Massa) Asselin, Sr.  in Norway, MI.  Sharon graduated from Norway High School in 1952 and was an accomplished pianist, but she ultimately chose a career in education.  She obtained her undergraduate degree at Marquette University followed by receiving a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Michigan, with certification in Hospitalized and Homebound Teaching.    

Sharon worked for approximately 30 years for the University of Michigan Health System until the 1990s,  first teaching children in the Burn Unit in University Hospital followed by teaching in the adolescent program at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.  Ultimately, as part of her role as Principal and Director of the Child Life Department in Mott Children’s Hospital, she served as a liaison between Child Life and the Kiwanis of Michigan Forney W. Clement Foundation.  Sharon cherished the years she worked at Child Life and formed lifelong friendships with her colleagues there. 

Sharon was the devoted wife for 52 years to William Shannon.  He preceded her death on November 18, 2022.  They lived in Redford Township, MI before moving to Ann Arbor, followed by moving to Jackson after they both retired.  They also enjoyed spending winters at their residence in Peoria, AZ, and traveling with friends and family. Sharon was a devout member of Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church in Jackson and previously of St. Thomas in Ann Arbor. 

Sharon was a joyous person who lifted spirits of all who accompanied her.  Her core values defined her and her compassion and sense of humor will be missed. She loved people and was a true University of Michigan footfall fan.    

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Darlene (Arnoldi) Asselin, and nieces in-law, Sharon (Robert) Polensek of Chattanooga, TN, and Holly (Scott) Vance of Ocala, FL.  Sharon was preceded in death by her brother, Dr. William Asselin, Jr. of Norway, MI. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 1:00 – 1:30 p.m. at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church in Jackson with mass immediately following with the Very Rev. Timothy MacDonald  officiating.  A graveside service will follow on Thursday, May 29th at 1:30 p.m. at Norway Township Cemetery, in Norway, MI.
