Sharon Mary Peacock, 80, passed away February 1, 2024 after a full life of family, friends, travel, and most of all, a love of life. Sharon was born March 19, 1943 in Eyota, Minnesota to Laurence and Luella Vrieze. She graduated from Eyota High School and went on to graduate from Mankato State University. She later continued her education at Eastern Michigan University and graduated with her Master of Arts in 1972. After graduation from Mankato State, Sharon started her teaching career in Minneapolis, Minnesota and then continued teaching until retirement at Jackson Public Schools in Jackson, Michigan. Sharon taught kindergarten and first grade early in her career and, later, her love of reading and children’s books led Sharon to becoming a Reading Specialist and a storyteller. As a lifelong learner, she immersed herself in studying the arts, reading and book clubs, Questers, and volunteering at local libraries and museums. Sharon traveled locally and internationally to see much of the art she studied and to make memories with family and friends.
Sharon married Henry McKeown and they had two children Sheryl and Charles. She was a member of the Jackson Women’s Tennis Club where she met many life long friends. She met the love of her life, Paul David Peacock, in 1985 and they were married in the spring of 1986. Sharon and Paul shared 24 years together hosting grandpa camp, golfing, and enjoying retirement on Lake Columbia in Brooklyn, Michigan. Sharon and Paul enjoyed hosting family and friends at the lake where Sharon cooked many delicious meals. She and her beloved Paul spent days on the lake and evenings playing card games betting a penny a point.
Sharon is survived by her brother Jim (Mert) Vrieze of Eyota, Minnesota; sisters Margret Brough of Blaine, Minnesota, Susan Anderson of Wabasso, Minnesota; her loving children Sheryl McKeown (Ross Jegglie) of Roseville, California, Charles (Kim) McKeown of Jackson; Paul’s loving children Cammie (Alex) Silvestri (Peacock) of Rives Junction and Dana (Chad) Everett (Peacock) of Pleasant Lake; 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Sharon was preceded in death by Laurence and Luella Vrieze, and her beloved husband Paul Peacock.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Sharon Peacock to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital, The Jackson District Library or National Public Radio. A visitation will be held from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm on February 13, 2024 at Watson Funeral Chapel, 2590 Spring Arbor Rd, Jackson, MI 49203. A celebration for Sharon’s life will take place later this spring, 2024. All are invited.
There is never enough time with those we love and cherish and every day is a gift. Sharon’s family extends love and gratitude for all that were a part of her life and her stories.
