R.D. Watson, 82, passed away peacefully at his home in Lake, Michigan on Monday, July 12, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was born at home in Michigan Center, MI to James J and Irene Frances Watson on March 28, 1939 and attended St. Mary’s and Michigan Center Schools (Class of 1957).
R.D. raised his family in the Jackson area and was a local businessman, owning and operating Watson Oil Co. and 145 Truck Stop. He was also active on the Napoleon School Board and in the Lake of the Pines Association for many years. He will be remembered for his love of the lake, being the captain of his pontoon, sharing his enjoyment of loons, snowmobiling with family and friends, trail rides on the Ranger, unfiltered jokes, and his love of sports, especially the University of Michigan.
He is preceded in death by his mother Irene Frances (Bauer) Watson, father James J. Watson, sister Elaine Taylor, brothers R.J. Watson, Rick Johnson, Greg Johnson, and his grandson Tyler Randall. He is survived by his loving wife Kathleen of 25 years, his children; Kary (Wendy) Watson, Kim Watson, Stacy (Tim) Cole, Alison (Nick) Bull, Corey (Trina) Myers and Casey (Bonnie) Myers, fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, his devoted sister Phyllis Hazeres, and brothers J.D. Watson, Jerry Watson and Ken Johnson.
Services will be held Saturday, July 17 at 11:00 am at the Watson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive visitors on Friday, July 16 from 5 pm – 8 pm and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan–Cadillac, 932 N. Mitchell St., Cadillac, MI 49601.
