Michael L. Smith

Michael L Smith, age 69 of Jackson, MI brought his light to heaven on Tuesday May 19, 2020. Mike was born February 28, 1951 in Evansville, Indiana and graduated from Willow Run High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  Mike served in the Air Force where he was an MP dog trainer and guarded planes in Vietnam. In addition to his love of country, was his love of all things University of Michigan and baseball. He worked for 31 years for General Motors before retiring and finished his career working in the Concord School District.  Mike’s smile and sense of humor could brighten anyone’s day and his endless encouragement to the kids he coached and mentored through baseball, basketball and his involvement in 4H equestrian riding will live on in the hearts of those he touched. He especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren and watching their various activities meant the world to him.  Mike’s greatest love was his wife Karen and spending time with family and friend sharing a meal, where his laughter and friendship would make everyone feel welcome. Mike is preceded in death by his parents Claude and Alline Smith; brother Alan Smith; first wife Donna Smith; and stepson Craig Broughman.  He is survived by his wife Karen (DeBruler); children Shawn (Jessica) Smith, Shane (Heather) Smith. Stacie Bost. Grandchildren: Evan, Isabella, Jordan and Rylynn; step-grandchildren, Darcy, Jordanne, Arianna, and David “D.J.”; nieces Karen Paige and Sharon Goins. Stepson Dennis (Jamie) Broughman and step grandchild, coleco; mother in law Joan DeBruler, brothers in law Ralph (Shirley) DeBruler, Dan (Jackie) DeBruler, James (Joellyn) DeBruler, Douglas (Kim) DeBruler and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews as well as many with the pleasure to call him a friend. A celebration of Michael’s life will be held on Tuesday June 23, 2020 at Village Hope Church, 123 W. Porter Street, Jackson, MI 49202 at 11:00am with Reverend’s Jeremy Toyer and Bart Hall officiating, military honors will follow the service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mike’s memory to Elara Caring Hospice, Central Wesleyan Church Jackson, Michigan or Village Hope Church.

The family will receive friends from 10:00am until the time of service.
