Mary Ellen Gleeson Simmons Rybicki, age 91, originally from Northbrook, Illinois went home to be with the Lord January 22, 2024 in Jackson, Michigan.  Mary Ellen was the younger daughter of John Francis Gleeson, born October 30, 1898 in Monroe, Nebraska and Ellen Estes Langan Gleeson born February 16, 1901 in Platte Center, Nebraska.  Mary Ellen was the granddaughter of John Frances Langan of Askeaton, Ireland and Margaret Marie Murphy Langan of Ireland.  Mary Ellen’s grandparents included John Francis Gleeson of Silvermines, Ireland and Mary Ellen Curran Gleeson of Streator (Streator), Illinois.

Mary Ellen is survived by daughter Suzanne Marie Simmons Walsh; grandson Andrew Maurice Walsh, daughter-in-law Danielle Berkemeier Walsh and great-grandchildren Ava Marie (11), Luce Elizabeth (11), Margaret Ann (7), Peter Joseph (4), and Catherine Jean (18 months).  Mary Ellen was blessed with a second daughter-in-law Anne Koperski Walsh, a loving first cousin, Margaret Mary Langan of Chicago and her dear niece and husband, Sheri and Gerry Kraus of Ogallala, Nebraska.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Rybicki, born in Torun, Poland December 12, 1918.  They married in 1977 in Northbrook, Illinois.  Wonderful son, John Foster Simmons born in North Platte, Nebraska October 9, 1954 passed away in Algonquin, Illinois December 20, 2020.  Dear Grandson Sean Matthew Walsh born August 7, 1981 in Chicago, Illinois went home to be with God, June 6, 2022 in Northbrook, Illinois.  Loving sister Joyce Gleeson OSB preceded Mary Ellen in death.  Born November 28, 1930, dedicated 61 years as a Benedictine Sister of Chicago, entered eternal life November 10, 2009.

Mary Ellen graduated St. Scholastica Catholic High School Chicago, Illinois in 1946.  She received her Bachelor Degree of Nursing from Drake University, Iowa in 1958.  Mary Ellen continued on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education and Counseling and Guidance in 1960’s from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois.  Mary continued her education to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in 1970’s.

Mary Ellen thoroughly enjoyed her 35 years working in the Chicago Public Schools as a School Nurse and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.  Her working efforts included part-time weekends in the Grant Hospital Neonatal Care Center in Chicago, Illinois and a few summers as a Camp Nurse at Camp Reinburg Palatine, Illinois.

Mary Ellen and Sister Joyce Gleeson were avid travelers to Alaska, Australia, Europe, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Russia with favorites of England and Ireland. Mary Ellen and Sister Joyce shared a great love of God, Family and Education.

A Catholic Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 120 E. Wesley Street, Jackson, Michigan on Friday, February 2, 2024 at 10:30 am.  Father Tim Nelson will officiate.  Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery Northbrook, Illinois.  Memorial contributions may be made to one’s charity of choice.
