Marvin Sexton Obituary

Marvin Edward Sexton, 86, of Jackson, Michigan went to be with the Lord Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Henry Ford Medical in Jackson. He was born to Rev. Willis E. and Hester F. (Nutter) Sexton on March 25, 1939 in Fayetteville, West Virginia.

He was united in marriage to Karen Hankins in Sterling, Michigan on August 25, 1962. The son of a pastor, Marvin would call several places home in both his native West Virginia and in Michigan, eventually settling in Jackson for the remainder of his life. After three decades working for Shelar Sanitation, he formed his own company, Drain Pro, in 1989, which he operated until his death. One of the many highlights of his business was the opportunity to work alongside son Randy and several brothers and nephews.

He was a long-time active member of the former Cascades Wesleyan Church, and for the past decade actively attended Encounter Church, both in Jackson. Marvin had a real passion for people to know the Lord and worked alongside pastors to help churches grow and flourish. He began each day in the Bible and with prayer, spending much time praying for everyone in his family. He loved to encourage people in their faith and always made time to talk in person or on the phone.

When he wasn’t working, he loved to joke around and tell stories. He was also a Detroit Lions and Tigers fan and enjoyed cheering on the University of Michigan. In his younger years he loved to spend time camping, hunting and fishing, usually with family and close friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Karen; sons, Randy Sexton of Jackson and Rev. Brian (Michelle) Sexton of Moline, Illinois; grandsons, Taylor Sexton (fiancée Anna Quijas) and Noah Sexton, both of Moline; siblings Anna Mae Duty of Spring Arbor; Russell (Karen) of Jackson; Doris Ruppert of Niles; Sandy Hankins of Arden, North Carolina; and Esther (Owen) Oswald of Jackson; brother-in-law, Dwight (Sharon) Hankins; sisters-in-law Joyce Sexton, Edda Hankins, and Lois Sexton; and many cherished nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Paul and Roger Sexton; brothers-in-law Darrel, Ron, and Doug Hankins, Nyle Ruppert and Richard Duty; sisters-in-law Cleo and Josephine Sexton, and Jean Hankins; and nephews Bruce Ruppert and Steve Epperly.

According to the family’s wishes, cremation has been accorded. A celebration of Marvin’s life will be held Saturday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Encounter Church, 620 Robinson Road, in Jackson, Rev. Andrew Walker officiating. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Encounter Church.
