Joyce Maynard Obituary

Joyce Maynard, age 75, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home. She is survived by her husband, Perry; her son, Eric (Julie) Maynard, and their children: Tim and Miranda Maynard; her daughter Nicole (Daryl) Love, and their children: Cora, Clara, and Caroline Love; her sister, Cheryl (Doyle) Moore, along with a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and her aunt Velma.  Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Mary Courser and her older sister, Donna Garcia.

Joyce was born August 13,1946 to Edwin and Mary Courser in Pontiac, Michigan. She was the second of three daughters of Rev. Edwin and Mary Courser. Her father pastored several Free Methodist churches in the East Michigan Conference of the Free Methodist Church.  Joyce attended several schools until her parents were assigned to the Williamston Free Methodist Church in 1961. Three years later, Joyce graduated with the class of 1964 from Williamston High School. Soon after her graduation, she took a job in the Business Office at the Lansing YMCA where she met her future husband Perry, who worked in the Youth Department. Their friendship progressed into courtship, and they were married in Lansing in June 1967. Joyce and Perry were married for 54 ½ years.

Joyce and Perry moved from Holt to Spring Arbor Township in 1971 and the following year their son Eric was born. In 1973, they were received into membership at the Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church while Joyce began working part-time at Spring Arbor College. In 1981, Joyce and Perry welcomed the birth of their daughter Nicole into the family, and in 1984 Joyce began working at the college on a full-time basis.  Joyce was among the first employees at Spring Arbor College to work in the new Adult Studies Program where she served as Coordinator of Records. In that role she wrote some 1200 adjunct faculty contracts a year. She retired in 2006 with 26 years of service.

Joyce’s hobbies and personal interests included: attractive interior decorating, watching HGTV, skillful outdoor gardening, excellent cooking, travelling with her husband and children, as well as highly motivated shopping, especially with her sister Cheryl.  Joyce came to a saving faith in Jesus Christ as a child. Throughout her lifetime by God’s grace, Joyce never wavered in her faith in the Lord… even during her battle with cancer. Joyce’s perseverance, tenacity, and endurance serve as a testimony of God’s grace, helping her to follow His will even in the face of hardship. One can be sure that Joyce was welcomed into heaven by the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 2:00pm at The Arbor Church, 120 E. Main Street, Spring Arbor, MI.  The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until the time of service.  Per CDC guidelines, masks are highly recommended.
