John passed away peacefully at home under the care of hospice on October 12, 2025, at the age of 57.
Born on September 30, 1968, in Jackson, Michigan, John was the son of Lynn and Sandy Matteson, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Randy Matteson; step-father, Don Bishop; and father-in-law, Eugene “Jeep” Randis.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Tracy Matteson; daughters, Nicole Dominique (Jason) Rutz and Jaimie Dominique; and his beloved grandchildren, Alexis, Kaleb, Gavin, Karmen, and Mia. He also leaves behind his sister, Vicki (Steve) Larmee; nephews, Derek Matteson, Devin (Alexis) Matteson, Chad (Leslie) Hands; niece, Shaina Larmee; stepbrother, Doug Bishop; mother-in-law, Beverly Randis; sister-in-law, Karen (John) Lane; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
A 1986 graduate of Jackson High school, John began his career at Michigan Seat Company, where he worked for nearly 20 years. He next spent several years at LE Warren Inc. in Jackson. In 2017, he pursued his true passion by founding Michigan Woodcrafter, a woodworking business where his creativity and craftmanship shone. Specializing in laser-engraved urns for local funeral homes, as well as custom plaques, charcuterie boards, cabinetry, and hand-carved pipes, John approached each project with care, precision, and pride-never putting his name on a piece until it met his exacting standards.
John loved the simple pleasures of life. A homebody at heart, he also enjoyed traveling with Tracy, taking trips across the country, especially to the American West. He was an avid ice fisherman and cherished the time he spent on the ice each winter with his lifelong best friend and fishing partner, Joe.
John will be remembered as a kind, generous man who was always ready to lend a hand to family or friends. His presence, love, and quiet strength will be deeply missed.
Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place. John will be laid to rest at Horton Cemetery in Hanover Township in the Spring of 2026 (date to be announced), with celebration of his life to follow.
