John D Frye

John “Johnny” Donald Frye, age 72, of Jackson, Michigan, passed away on January 12, 2026, while in hospice care, after bravely facing multiple battles with cancer. He was born on August 4, 1953, in Three Rivers, Michigan. John’s early life included many moves before he was adopted on March 18, 1963, by Georgia “Maxine” Frye and Donald Lewis Frye, who gave him a loving home and family. He later became a proud brother to Diana Conant (Michael) and David Frye, who preceded him in death. John is survived by his beloved daughter, Stephanie Field (Kyle); his greatest pride and joy, his grandson, Grayson Howard; his longtime partner of nearly 20 years, Casey Wilkinson; his sister, Diana Conant (Michael); his sister-in-law, Lisa Frye; and a multitude of close friends who were family to him throughout the many chapters of his life. A Parma Western High School graduate, Class of 1971, John believed in honest work and never shied away from rolling up his sleeves. He spent more than 20 years with the Jackson Recreation Department, worked running a printing press, owned and operated Freddy Pepper’s bar and restaurant, and took on countless handyman jobs along the way. He was a lifelong athlete, playing multiple sports as a child and remaining a devoted Detroit sports fan as an adult. He played competitive softball for many years, continuing until he was no longer physically able. He was well known for his generosity, loyalty, and willingness to help those less fortunate. John loved fiercely and never missed the chance to tell a good story—especially if it ended in laughter. He will be remembered as a hardworking, loyal man who consistently showed up for others.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 11, 2026, from 1:00–5:00 p.m. at Sullivan’s, 1514 Daniel Rd., Jackson, Michigan. The family will hold a private burial at a later date. In place of flowers, donations may be made to honor John’s legacy by supporting his grandson Grayson’s post–high school education fund.
