James W. Grose, Sr. (“Jim”), of Jackson, Michigan, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, at the age of 82 in Jackson, Michigan. Born on March 4, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, Jim lived most of his life in Jackson, raising a family, Jim was deeply involved in the Jackson area and a beloved member of his community. Jim was the son of Russell and Mary Grose, and brother to Michael. Jim graduated from Edwin Denby High School in Detroit, Michigan in 1960. From there he enlisted in the US Army, serving as a Cryptologic Technician in Turkey and the Military District of Washington attaining the rank of Specialist 5. Upon completing his service to the nation, Jim, like many others used the GI Bill to attend college. Jim Graduated from Wayne State University in 1969 and embarked on a career in advertising. Jim married Dianne in 1970, in a marriage that lasted the rest of his life. In 1973, Jim and Dianne welcomed their son, James. After living and working in Grand Rapids, the Grose family moved to Jackson in 1974.
In Jackson, Jim worked in advertising for Union Steel Products in Albion, WILX Television in Jackson and finally Heat Controller in Jackson. Jim was the Advertising Manager for Heat Controller, Inc. for many years and was widely respected for his work ethic and loyalty. His passion for serving the Jackson area youth was evident when, after serving for many years as a volunteer, Jim departed Heat Controller to become a full-time employee of the Boy Scouts of America rising to the position of Senior District Executive of the Land O’ Lakes and Great Sauk Trail councils, based in Jackson. Jim’s was evident to all who knew him, and he made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered. In addition to his professional accomplishments, James was a proud member of Jackson Jaycees, serving as their Vice President and President, as a Salvation Army advisory board member, the Jackson and Litchfield Rotarys, and volunteering with Jackson Disability Connections as a board member and eventually President. In every organization he was a member of he eagerly shared his time, talents, and kindness with others. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer words of encouragement, leaving behind a legacy of service, compassion, and generosity. Jim’s honors and accolades were many but are highlighted by recognitions as a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts’ national honor society, in recognition of his exemplary representation of the Scout Oath and Law, the Scoutmaster Award of Merit, the US Army’s Good Conduct Medal, among many others. When not serving as a volunteer he enjoyed golfing, collecting stamps, US Civil War history, and travelling with his wife to visit friends and family. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, known for his warm heart, quick wit, and commitment to his family. James is survived by wife of 54 years, Dianne, his son, James W. Grose, Jr (Christian) of Lansing, Michigan, and his grandson, Austin Hawkey of Petoskey, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents Russell and Mary, and his brother, Michael.
A funeral service in honor of James will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 10:30 at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church, Jackson, Michigan with internment to follow at Mount
Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. Family will receive family friends for visitation on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 9:30 at Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity or cause of their choice if desired. Also, random acts of kindness in Jim’s honor are appreciated. Jim will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his devotion to his friends, and his ever-present kindness and good humor to all those around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
