Harry Abner Frank Canning, Jr.

Harry Abner Frank Canning Jr. “Hairbone”, age 69, of Jackson, MI passed away on July 1, 2026. 

He was born on July 3, 1956, in Jackson, MI, to Harry and Pauline (Hudson) Canning. 

Harry graduated from Jackson High School and continued his education at Jackson College, where he earned an associate degree. 

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, Harry worked as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan for 26 years.

From 2006 to 2010, Harry volunteered for the Jackson High hockey team. He was a loving father and grandfather, and the biggest fan of his grandchildren’s sporting events. 

Harry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cherri Lynn (Clark); his children, Alisha (Drew) Gwinn, Brian (Melissa) Canning; his grandchildren, Max, Cooper, Remington, and Riley; his brothers, Frank (Barbara) and John; his sister, Linn; and his nephew, Michael.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved German Shepherd, Eli.

Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 12:30pm at Watson Funeral Chapel, 2590 Spring Arbor Rd., Jackson, MI, with Michael D. Mason officiating. Visitation will be held at 11:30am and will continue until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made in Harry’s memory to Cascades Humane Society, 1515 Carmen Dr., Jackson, MI, or to the Jackson Animal Shelter, 3370 Spring Arbor Rd., Jackson, MI.
