Gerald Stetler Obituary

Of Jackson, Michigan passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, December 14, 2018

At the age of 93. He was the son of Glen and Elizabeth (Bacon) Stetler, born February 22, 1925 in Jackson, MI. Gerald is survived by his wife of 72 years, Janice L.; daughter, Susan L. (Robert) Heathman; son, Gary W. Stetler (Carola) of Woodland Park, CO.; granddaughter Randi C. Heathman of Horton; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Glen “Bus” Stetler; four sisters, Grace Marston, Thelma Southworth, Betty O’Leary, and Jane Hoffman. Jerry served his country proudly for four years in the United States Navy on a light cruiser in the African- Italian Theatre during WWII. He was a survivor of a direct hit on his ship that took the lives of over 200 shipmates and was later part of the escort fleet that took President Roosevelt to Yalta for the surrender. At one time he was the youngest member of the local VFW. He owned and operated Stetler Cleaners, Inc., was a longtime member of MILD, serving as treasurer. He was former Vestry member of Christ Church, Henrietta; a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Elk Lodge #113, Jackson Host Lions Club (past chairman of Sight Conservation Committee), VFW, and the Jackson Chamber of Commerce. Jerry was a longtime private pilot; former member of 10-40 Flying Club and present member of the Cloud Busters and EEA. He never turned down a request for help. He loved his family, his companion Missy,  conservation and planting of trees and nursery stock, fishing with companions at O’Slats Camp, especially Don Troyer and Paul Stowell. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 309 S. Jackson St., Jackson, MI 49201 on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 1:00pm.; Reverend Sarah Hurlbert officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sight Conservation of Jackson Host Lions Club or the charity of your choice.

The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday, December 19 from 12:00pm until the time of service.
