Gene Wandel Obituary

Age 95, peacefully passed away on March 20, 2021 in the comfort of Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Care. She enjoyed her previous residence at Countryside Assisted Living where she appreciated the staff and personal care. Gene was born July 20, 1925 and became a mighty proud Texan, along with her brother John (Peggy) Stinnett in Gatesville, Texas, who preceded Gene in death. Gene attended the University of Texas and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Eastern Michigan University in Journalism. Gene relocated to Jackson with her husband, Ben Wandel, who passed in 2005. Gene is survived by daughters, Genette (Jerry Pfeiffle) Gillard, Benita (Rob Krueger) Wandel, and son, Lee (Lorna) Wandel. In addition, Gene was blessed with grandchildren, Kirk Gillard, Kathryn Gillard, Carter (Susan) Krueger, Ben Krueger, Justin (Abbey) Wandel, Jacob Wandel; and great-grandchildren, Griffin and Joey Wandel. She was especially loved, as well, by niece Gena (Jaimie) Lloyd and nephew Reid Stinnett.

Gene was a long-time resident of Jackson where she established herself as a devout member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church as well as a journalism teacher and award-winning yearbook advisor at Jackson High School, retiring in 1974.  She also became editor of “Jackson Downtown,” a monthly newsletter regarding business in downtown Jackson.  Retirement afforded Gene and her husband, Ben, the opportunity to engage in extensive travel throughout the world as well as becoming a member of P.E.O. at the request and invitation of numerous friends.  Through the combination of charities, Country Club of Jackson, Ella Sharp Museum, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and other social circles, Gene was befriended and loved by many in Jackson.

By Gene’s request, cremation has taken place and a family celebration of Gene’s life will take place at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ella Sharp Museum, 3225 Fourth St, Jackson, MI 49203; Jackson Symphony, 215 W. Michigan Ave, Jackson, MI 49201, or P.E.O., 3700 Grand Ave, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
