He was also pre-deceased by his in laws, James and Lois Smith.

In high school Walter was an accomplished student athlete, playing three sports: baseball, football and basketball. During the summers he played organized baseball in Detroit. He was offered a pro baseball contract with the Minnesota Twins upon his graduation from John F Kennedy High School in Taylor, Michigan. Instead, he took a full college scholarship for baseball to the University of Detroit where he majored in chemistry. He went on to the University of Michigan Dental school and graduated with a doctor of dental surgery in 1975. He then took an oral surgery residency at the University of Michigan and graduated with a master’s degree in oral surgery in 1979 from Michigan.

After completing his dental studies, Walter moved to Jackson to work with Dr. Jerry Booth and practiced oral surgery until his forced retirement in 1994 due to his health issues with Parkinson’s disease.  After retirement, he become a stay-at-home dad and worked extensively with his children, helping with schoolwork and taking them to guitar lessons and karate classes.  After the children graduated from high school, Walter developed his creative side and became an accomplished studio musician, writing and composing chill jazz music, singing, and producing numerous CDs.  With the help of his wife and many devoted caretakers, he was able to travel the California coast, and to Arizona, New York and Brazil. Despite his health and mobility challenges, Walter always kept a positive attitude and his spirit burned brightly.
