Dorothy Garnettia Wiggins, 97, passed away in Jackson, MI, on Wednesday, March 21st, 2025. She was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on September 28th, 1927, the daughter of John Gilliland and Myra (Littlefield) Gilliland.
Dorothy graduated from high school at Sinking Fork in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, with her high school diploma. After graduating from high school, Dorothy became an ER nurse at Jennie Stuart Hospital in Hopkinsville during World War II. During this time, she met her husband, Private Fred Newton Wiggins, in the United States Army. They moved to Jackson, Michigan, and were married on April 19th, 1944, for 39 years, before Fred passed away in July 1983. Dorothy worked at Woolworth’s in Jackson for 30 years, and after retiring, she started her antique gift shop. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, birdwatching, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her loved ones. Dorothy was an amazing and loving mother, granny, and great-granny.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, John and Myra (Littlefield) Gilliland; her husband, Fred Wiggins; her brothers, Wayne and Keith Gilliland; and her sister, Nell (Gilliland) Cansler.
She is survived and deeply missed by her sons Richard Wiggins of Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Kathy) Wiggins of Jackson, grandchildren Haylee and Karrah Wiggins of Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Antonio Carranza of Hampstead, NC, and Mr. and Mrs. Juan Carranza of Jackson, and five great-grandchildren: Antonio, Amerie, Lila, Adaline, and Lorenzo.
A graveside service will be held at Horton Cemetery on May 29th, 2025, at 11 am. with Michael D. Mason, officiating.
