Donna Lou Mason was born July 4, 1950, to Kermit and Wilma Hatfield in Toledo, Ohio. After a long illness, at age 73, on January 23, 2024, she went home to be with the Lord and to join all those in the glories of God’s presence who have gone before her. Especially her Grandmother Krieger.
Donna was a 1968 graduate of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School and a 1972 graduate of Great Lakes Bible (now Christian) College in Lansing, Michigan, with a Bachelor of Sacred Literature majoring in Music. Donna was a very talented musician on saxophone, piano and organ, as well as a gifted singer. She traveled with music groups representing the college and formed the Women’s Quartet named “The Evangelons”.
On July 9, 1972, she married Michael D. Mason at First Christian Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan. This date was specifically chosen in honor of the July 9, 1910, wedding date of her grandparents, William and Gertrude Krieger. Donna and Michael celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2022 with a trip to Mackinac Island with her family. Her greatest joy and accomplishments were being mother to two children, Robbi (Todd) Davis of Canton, Michigan, and Christopher M. Mason Sr. of Jackson, Michigan; three grandchildren Christopher M. Mason Jr., Erionna Warren, and Logan Mason; and two bonus grandchildren Noah Davis and Antonio Davis; sister to two brothers, Kerry (Tim) Hatfield-Taylor of St. Petersburg, Florida and Willis (Susan) Hatfield of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
Donna joined Michael in ministry in 1973 at First Church of Christ—Christian (now Cornerstone Church) of Jackson, Michigan. In addition to her Musical Ministry as Church organist, she was exceptionally gifted at teaching preschool children. She also inaugurated and led the Puppet Players ministry at the local congregation for several years. In addition, she provided a much-loved presence as the Senior Minister’s wife who loved and ministered with the people of the congregation and community. She worked alongside Michael as Administrative Assistant for many years until her retirement in 2015.
Donna was a devoted fan of University of Michigan football and was thrilled when the team won the 2023 National Championship. She was an avid shopper and loved Black Friday shopping with her daughter. She could find the best bargains and her family was often “blessed” with all sorts of “grandma” gifts, especially at Christmas which was her favorite holiday. She was an avid collector of Department 56 Dickens Village, Funko Pops, Gnomes and several other collectible treasures. As a July 4th baby, she also loved watching fireworks with “the big booms” and her voice could easily be heard shouting encouragement! She loved the excitement of riding roller coasters for as long as she was physically able.
Above all, Donna passionately loved and was totally devoted to her husband and family. She passionately loved and was totally devoted to the Lord. She was disciplined to reading through her Bible and devotions daily every year. Her laugh was infectious. Her kindness was a blessing. Her love was immense. Her faith was absolute. Her smile could light up the room.
