On Saturday, August 12, 2023, Donald W. Mansfield, a beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away. He was ninety-three. Don was born in Oak Park Illinois to Evelyn and Thomas Mansfield.
He attended the University of Illinois where he met Martha Conn, also a student, and the two married on March 24, 1951. After Don graduated with a bachelor of science degree in June 1951, Don served in the U. S. Armed Forces and was stationed for a time in Germany. Upon returning home, Don completed a master of science degree also at the University of Illinois. In August 1954, he and Martha moved to Jackson Michigan where Don was employed in the human resources department at Consumers Power Company. He held leadership positions in the American Gas Association and the Edison Electric Institute while also being employed at Consumers Power. He retired in September 1987 and formed a consulting firm where he worked for several more years.
Don was active in the First Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder, and choir member, among other volunteer roles. Don loved the theater and participated in productions of the community theater group, Center Stage Jackson. At age 78, in 2007, he founded Center Stage Jackson’s Youth Theater and continued to lead it for several years more. In recognition for his work in youth theater, Don received a Spotlight Award from the American Association of Community Theatre in 2011. For several years, Don served on the board of directors for Jackson’s Town Club and also Vista Grande Villa. Don was the primary caregiver for his wife Martha in her later years until her passing in December 20, 2018 after 67 years of marriage. Don is survived by brother Thomas Mansfield, daughter Ellen Stephenson, and son Donn Mansfield, and grandchildren Andrew Mansfield, Joshua Stephenson, and Scott Mansfield and a great granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, Michigan at 2 PM, preceded by visitation at 1 PM also at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Kidney Fund.
