Donald Jones, MD Obituary

In loving memory of Dr. Donald C. Jones, Jr.

August 31,1955  -  December 27, 2025

Dr. Donald Charles Jones, Jr., aged 70, of Jackson, Michigan, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, surrounded by loving family and friends.

Donald was born in Brooklyn, New York to Dr. Donald Charles Jones, Sr., and Elizabeth M. (DePalma) Jones. He received his Associates degree in Science from Suffolk County Community College and would later attend Hofstra University where he earned his pre-med degree.  From there, Donald received his medical degree in Family Practice from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 1993. His journey would then take him to his future home of Michigan, where Donald completed his internships and residency through Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

He began practicing family medicine in Jackson in 1996 and shortly thereafter proudly established his own private practice in 1999. For three decades, Donald dedicated himself to caring for the people of Jackson, Michigan. He served the community he loved with deep compassion, skill, and commitment. His patients were not just patients to him- they were family and he took great pride in being their doctor.

Not one to sit still, Donald had a lust for life and lived every day to its fullest. He had a deep drive to conquer new challenges and loved the thrill of pushing himself to new limits. This passion would take him on countless adventures and yield unforgettable tales. His first and longest adventure was in the open sky.

As a boy in Brooklyn, he daydreamed of becoming a pilot. In his late teens that dream became a reality when he attained his pilot's license. He would fly every chance he got; achieving ratings on multiple aircraft, and even becoming a professional charter pilot for years before finding medicine. He would maintain his pilot's license and love of flight for fifty years.  While in school at St. Georges, Donald found his love for the sea. When not studying he was perfecting his skills as a scuba diver, eventually becoming skilled enough to dive the ship wrecks off the coast of Grenada.

There were also plenty of adventures to be had on land. With a clear love for cars and all things fast, he set his eye to racing.  In short order, he became a formula driver and competed in the Skip Barber Racing Series. In between laps, he also served as the track physician. A life long cyclist and mountain biker, the people of Jackson no doubt saw him on his daily 30 mile rides which he would take religiously every day at lunch. When the weather turned cold, you could find him skiing black diamonds.

Above all, he was known for his passion, intelligence, generosity, and unwavering commitment to the people he loved.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Amy Jones; his sister, Patricia Jones Rossmy; his nephew, Michael D. Rossmy (Kelsey Rainwater); children, William Versluys (Casey Hargis), Joseph Versluys (Reilly Kofflin), and Amanda Versluys (Michael Bennett-Norman), Emily Pettit (Eric); and beloved grandchildren, Lialah, Herbie, Mia, Forest, Macey, Cole, Liam, Elijah, Cooper, and Evangeline; a wide circle of friends; a wonderful work family; his two dogs Baron and Molly, and his three cats Em, Gracie, and Smokey. Donald was preceded in death by his parents.
