Donald Elmer Engel

Donald “Don” Elmer Engel, Age 88, of Jackson, MI went home to be with the Lord on June 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. 

He was born on March 10, 1938, in Detroit, MI to Elmer and Annie Engel. 

Don graduated from Dearborn High School before attending Michigan Technological University on a full scholarship. He later transferred to Eastern Michigan University, where he earned his teaching certificate. After teaching for several years, he obtained a master’s degree in business and taxation. He then attended Wayne State University, where he proudly earned his law degree. 

Don shared 39 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Carol. They were married on August 7, 1987, in a rose garden in Mount Pleasant. Together they enjoyed traveling abroad and spending time on the golf course. 

Don began his career as a teacher before transitioning into the field of taxation. He worked in the tax departments at General Motors and Aeroquip before earning his law degree. He later moved to Chicago, where he practiced as a corporate attorney. After returning to Jackson, he founded Engel Corporation and continued serving clients as a consultant until his retirement. 

He enjoyed caring for his lawn, bowling, solving Sudoku puzzles, and reading. He especially loved golfing and was a devoted fan of Michigan college sports. 

Don is survived by his children, Donald (Tammy) Engel Jr., Dawn (Kevin) Madry, and Dione (Mark) Szydlowski; his stepchildren, Steven Worsham and Christopher Worsham; his grandchildren, Nicole, Chandler, Hailey, Julia, Caroline, Allen, Amanda, Jacob, Ryan, Hannah, and Gracie; his four great-grandchildren, Austin, Kaylee, Ollie, and Kylan; several nieces and nephews; and Katy, the mother of Bob’s children. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nancy; and his stepson, Robert “Bob” Worsham.

Above all, Don cherished his family. Being “Papa” was one of his greatest joys, and he loved sharing adventures with his grandchildren, especially memorable trips to Disneyland. 

Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 2:30pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1505 W Michigan Ave, Jackson, MI, with Pastor Kate Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be held at 2:00pm and will continue until the time of service. A light meal will be served following the service. Memorial contributions may be made in Don’s memory to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Henry Ford Hospice Home, 2150 Kingsbrooke Dr, Jackson, MI.
