Catherine L. Smothers

Catherine L. Smothers, 78 of Jackson, MI, went home to be with the Lord on August 16, 2021 at Jackson County Medical Care facility. She was the daughter of Daniel and Gladys (Duemer) Abner. She was born on June 23,1943 in Chicago, IL. Catherine is survived by her husband of 56 years, Kenneth; her children Tim (Karen) Smothers, Tony (Melissa) Smothers, Sandy (David) Miller, and Kevin Smothers; her grandchildren Cherice (Robert) Lindsey, Candace (Joe) Reed, Josh Miller, Leanna Miller, and Guinn Smothers; her great-grandchildren Brady Reed, Annalisa Evon, and Everett Reed; her siblings Dan (Sue) Abner and Nancy Abner; her nephew Jeff (Cherri) Abner; and her niece Jodi (Paul) Kope. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents Daniel and Gladys Abner.

She graduated from West Frankfort Community High School and went on to Saint Louis Baptist School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse. Catherine worked as a nurse and started and managed her own daycare business called “Smotherly Love Day Care” for over 30 years. She was a member at Lansing Avenue Baptist Church for 40 plus years. She was actively engaged with the children’s ministries. In addition to her passion for working with children, Catherine enjoyed music, reading, piano, and word searches.

A Celebration of her Life will be held on Thursday August 19, 2021 at 2:00pm at Lansing Avenue Baptist Church, 4000 Lansing Ave, Jackson, MI with Pastor Steve Sebring officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the celebration. Memorial contributions may be made to Lansing Avenue Baptist Church.
