Avis L. Schulze, 103, attended by her family and staff from Countryside Retirement Community, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, in Jackson, Michigan.
Born and raised on a strawberry farm off Six Mile and Meyers Road in Detroit, she absorbed the values of her community. The middle of three sisters, she learned clear communication skills that served her for a lifetime. Her often-stated phrase, “that’s wonderful!” states her optimistic philosophy perfectly. Avis spent her working years as a City Clerk in Huntington Woods and at the Merrill-Palmer Institute. After her retirement in 1982, she and her family traveled the world with the Nomads travel club.
A lively conversationalist, Avis loved to tell stories about her experiences. Favorite stories included a childhood memory of Henry Ford offering her mother a ride. She also spoke lovingly of her beloved Welsh Terrier, “Candy.” Avis attributes her longevity to regular exercise and shunning sugar since her early 20s. Her family insists that other contributing factors include her optimism and persona of loving-kindness.
Avis was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and Bernard Schulze, sisters Elaine and Claire, niece Whitney and nephew Shawn. She is survived by nephews, David Parham (Linda), Dr. Robert Albertson III (Katherine), and James Parham (Anna Bates), great niece Megan (Nicole), great nephews Zachary (Stephanie), Timothy (Melissa), and Samuel (Marissa) and great great nieces and nephews Bradley, Olivia, Flynn, Fiona, Lauren, Lula and Teague.
Per her request, her ashes will be laid to rest at Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit at a future date.
