Austin Lyle "Gene"

Austin, Lyle “Gene”, of Parma, went to be with the Lord surrounded by his loving family at home, on Saturday, October 12, 2024, Age 89 years.

Gene was born in Jackson to the late Alan Brown Austin and Gertrude Virginia Springer.  He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Alice Marie (Kemp) Austin, and was the proud father to his daughter, Michelle “Shelly” (Scott) Mead, and son Scott (Cathy) Austin.  His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.  He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Rebecca (Henry) Heim, and Bradley (Stephanie) Mead, Brian (Kayla) Austin; Kyle Austin; and great-grandchildren, Lila and Kaleb Heim, and Case Mead. Gene was always excited about the newest grandbabies to come. He leaves behind his brother-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and eleven siblings; Gene was the ninth child of twelve children. 

Gene spent his life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandpa. He served in the United States military and was a proud Army Veteran.  Following his service, he spent 40 years working for Kelsey-Hayes, and helping on the family farm. Gene loved working, even after retirement; he went back to work at Performance Automotive – West in Jackson. In-between working and farming, he loved taking his grandchildren on vacations.  When he wasn’t working or spending time with his family, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushrooming, gardening, and being outdoors. 

Gene was the great shepherd of his sheep.  He always looked forward to Sunday service with his family and church family. He always put a smile on everyone’s face and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  His legacy will live on by sharing his memorable moments and great stories with his friends and family.

A Celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at 12:00 pm at Spring Life Church, 9421 Benn Road, Parma with Reverend Michael Cary officiating.  Visitation will be held from 11:00am until the time of service.  Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Tompkins. 

In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations be made to Spring Life Church or a charity of your choice in Gene’s honor.
