Arthur Wierenga, 83, of Horton, Michigan entered the church militant on August 1, 1941 and joined the church triumphant on December 14, 2024. He leaves to honor his memory his children; Carol Wierenga, M.D., Elizabeth “Lee” Wierenga, Jon Wierenga, and Robert (Kelly) Wierenga, M.D.; his sisters, Ruth and Gladys Wierenga, his grand children Owen and Macy Adams, 1 niece, 3 nephews, a sister-in-law, Sue King, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma (King) Wierenga, his parents John and Theresa (Boes) Wierenga, his brothers/sisters-in-law, Bob and Shari King and Helen and Bill Posthuma.
Cremation has taken place.
Art was a graduate of Calvin College (now Calvin University) and Wayne State University, School of Medicine.
He continued his training at Denver Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, Colorado, in Orange Grove, California, and at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital upon his discharge from the Navy in 1973, he moved to Jackson, Michigan providing eye care for those who lived in Jackson and the surrounding areas. He also mentored future medical care providers.
He had a special place in his heart for medical missions from the time he was in medical school. He traveled with Christian Medical and Dental Society, Medical Missions International, and most recently with the Michigan contingent of Helps International.
In addition to medicine, he enjoyed spending time with his family, working on the family farm, riding his tractor, hunting, woodcarving, and reading.
The family will receive friends at the Church prior to the funeral service. Visitation will be held at Watson Funeral Chapel on January 10, 2025 from 4:00pm-6:00pm and visitation from 10:00am until the time of service on January 11, 2025 at Concord United Methodist Church. Service will begin at 11:00am with Pastor Stephen Kazar Officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Helps Michigan Medical or to Calvin University – Art Wierenga Family Health Sciences Scholarship.
The family would like to thank the Arbor Manor Care staff for their exceptional care.
Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
