Philip Carl Leathead

Of Jackson, MI, went home to be with his Lord Monday, March 11, 2019 at the age of 95. Phil was born at home to his parents Ralph and Alice (Pries) Leathead on May 4, 1923. He attended Jackson Public Schools, graduated in June 1941. In 1942, he left Cleary Business School in Ypsilanti to join the Army Air Force. He became a B-24 Liberator Bomber Pilot and served in the Pacific Theatre until WWII ended in August (Sept) 1945. He was then stationed in Japan until February 1946. Phil met and married Kathryn Johnson and together they had Jennifer (Wolf) Poltl and her daughters Brigette Ann (Greg) Goble & Angela (John) Kennedy; Johanna (William) Lubahn and her son Elvin E. (Lourdes) Duvall IV and their son Jordon (Jessica) Lubahn; Jeffrey (Barbara) Leathead and their children Jessica (Gino) Salvatore & Philip (Emily) Leathead; and twin sons; 11 great-grandchildren who survive him.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Kathryn, and his twin sons. He began his business career when he and his parents opened a grocery store (Greenwood Market) and then six years later he became the owner of Beach & Heuman Sporting Goods, had that business until 1989. In 1970 Phil and family moved to a farm in the Parma area where they really enjoyed farm living and raising Angus Cattle. Phil left the farm in 2003 and married Phyllis Ann Blank in 2005. They lived and enjoyed life at Vista Grande Villa. Phil was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church and over the years served on many committees. At the age of 95 he was still serving on one of the accounting teams. A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 122 W. Wesley Street, Jackson, MI on Monday, March 18, 2019 at 11:00 am, Reverend Dr. Scott Sommerfeld officiating, interment Chapel Cemetery following. Memorial contributions in memory of Phil may be made to the American Cancer Society. 1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, Michigan 48823.   Visitation at the Watson Funeral Chapel in Jackson will be held Sunday, March 17, 2019 from 1:00 – 5:00 pm and at the church Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am.
