Martha Schwark Obituary

Schwark, Martha Anne, 56, of Jackson, passed away on Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Henry Ford Hospice Home.  She was born on October 9, 1962, in Midland, Michigan, daughter of Gerald J. “Gerry” and Sylvia D. (Bellman) Schwark. She graduated in 1981 from Herbert Henry Dow High School in Midland and attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1986 with a degree in Hospitality Business. Following several positions in the restaurant industry, she obtained a paralegal certification and worked for law firms in Ann Arbor before joining the Legal Department at Consumers Energy in Jackson in 1992. She then worked in Damage Claims before becoming a buyer in Supply Chain. She enjoyed working both with internal clients and outside vendors and made many close friends during her 26 year career at Consumers.

Martha was passionate about fitness, animals, and spending time in the Upper Peninsula. She was a member of the Jackson YMCA where she was a certified BODYPUMP instructor, teaching weekly classes as a volunteer for decades. Students loved the energetic and goofy style she brought to class, and coffee with YMCA friends after class became a weekly ritual. Martha also loved animals, adopting several shelter pets from the Cascades Humane Society. She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on South Manistique Lake in the Upper Peninsula, particularly with her nephews. In lieu of a funeral, she requested that her ashes be scattered at the cottage where she planned to spend summers when retired.

Surviving are her mother Sylvia of Westlake, Ohio; sister Joanne (Andrew Bell) of Lakewood, Ohio; and nephews Ian and Evan Bell of Lakewood, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her father Gerry.

Her family wishes to thank Martha’s many friends from Consumers and the YMCA who have been so supportive during this difficult time. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Cascades Humane Society of Jackson or the Jackson YMCA.
