Age 101, passed away peacefully with his children by his side on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. He was a loving husband and father who had a deep commitment to his family.
Julius (Jules), served honorably in the Army Air Corp as a Master Sergeant and survived the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. He returned home and married the love of his life, Kathryn, on her birthday in 1948. They raised three children who were a big part of his life. The family enjoyed many camping trips across the country which were his favorite memories. He loved spending time fishing in northern Michigan. Beach time, blueberry picking, and sunsets were favorite pastimes at the family cottage in South Haven.
Jules was an active gardener at home, known for growing sensational tomatoes. The family spent time canning various fruits, vegetables, and jams.
Jules was the life of the party with his singing, telling jokes, and quick humorous responses that became famous “Juleisms.” When asked what his secret was to living such a long life he always responded, “Think good thoughts, and do good deeds.” This motto is how Jules lived his life and what made him truly remarkable. He touched many lives with his positive spirit and will be loved forever. As Jules would say, “Happy, Happy.”
Julius is survived by three children: Carol Gimesky of Novato, CA, Susan Fecko of Grand Rapids, MI, and James Gimesky of Dundee, MI; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Jason, Brian, Jenna, Lauren, Allison, and Grace; two great-grandchildren, Christian and Dylan; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Kathryn, and his parents.
Memorial contributions in Julius’s honor may be made to the Talons Out Honor Flight, PO Box 280, Portage, MI 49081. Jules took a trip to Washington D.C. with this group honoring veterans and it was a highlight of his 100th year.
